At the loosest hole this holds an instep of 65 mm. At the tightest it closes down to 47 mm. Concealed hook-and-loop fastening under the band, 2.5 cm of continuous travel with no fixed holes.

Adjustable styles are worth trying at the loosest hole first. Tighten one hole at a time until the foot stops moving, and stop there.

Going up a size makes the sandal longer, not taller. It will not fix a tight instep — the strap anchor points move forward, not upward.

Three things to know before you buy

    Along the edges of the band

    A single band carries the whole hold, so all of the pressure runs along its two edges.

    What reduces it: Work the band edge between your fingers before the first wear. The strap softener speeds this up; a pad under the edge helps on long days.

  2. 2

    At the outer side opening

    With nothing enclosing the side of the foot, the foot shifts sideways on the bed and the little toe meets the rim.

    What reduces it: Tighten the forefoot strap by one hole so the foot stops travelling. If the style has no adjustment, size down only if the length chart supports it.

Two · break-in

There is more leather in a wide band, so it takes longer to soften. Expect 4–6 wears before the band stops feeling rigid across the instep.

Three · barefoot wear

Worn barefoot, the footbed takes sweat directly. Wipe it with a barely damp cloth after each wear and let it dry away from direct sun. The leather will darken where the ball of your foot and heel sit — that is patina, and it is a characteristic of unfinished leather, not a fault.
